The Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) is a Melbourne-based Australian Government statutory agency that conducts high-quality, impartial research into the wellbeing of Australian families, which then informs government policy and promotes evidence-based practice in the family services sector.

We are seeking applications from technically proficient, motivated and strategic finance professionals and people managers for the role as AIFS’ new Chief Financial Officer. Based in light-filled, open plan offices at Southbank, AIFS offers a positive, supportive environment with flexible working conditions and scope for professional development and growth.

Reporting directly to AIFS’ Chief Operating Officer, the successful candidate will work closely with the Executive team and the broader Senior Leadership Group to deliver on the organisation’s financial and strategic goals. The role’s core responsibilities will be to provide high-level financial advice to the organisation, to build relationships with key stakeholders (particularly non-finance stakeholders) and to provide engaging, inspiring leadership to an established finance team.

Key deliverables for the first 12 months will include the establishment of a new long-term financial plan, an uplift in internal financial capability, reporting and metrics, and preparing for a major upgrade to the FMIS.

This role is a genuinely strategic management position with responsibility for provision of financial expertise and leadership throughout the organisation. The organisation embraces an approach of continuous improvement, and this role will be expected to work with the broader organisation to identify areas of business process improvement, with the goal of enhancing organisational outcomes.

Your inspirational leadership style and natural coaching ability will allow you to work with the existing team to aid their professional development and to ensure that the team is able to deliver on the shared organisational purpose.

The successful candidate will have a proven ability to build strong relationships across the whole organisation and to provide high calibre leadership to the existing finance team, enabling the organisation to work towards its strategic goals. As a senior leader, you’ll be expected to be a role model for AIFS’ and the Australian Public Service’s values to guide your behaviour, decision making and interactions with staff and stakeholders.

Strong strategic leadership, people management and project management experience and technical accounting skills are fundamental, as is the demonstrated ability to understand, interpret and apply relevant legislation, particularly in the areas of financial and risk management. CPA or CA qualifications are mandatory, as is a commitment to service excellence and continuous improvement. Experience within a Government or regulatory environment will be looked upon favourably.
